Slack integration

Get a message in a Slack channel when your feedback needs attention. Voxtrics posts to Slack from an alert: a rule that watches incoming responses, for example "at least 3 ratings of 2 or lower within an hour". Slack is connected through an incoming webhook, a web address Slack gives you for one channel, so there's nothing to install on the Voxtrics side.

Create a webhook in Slack

You need permission to add apps to your Slack workspace. If only admins approve apps in your workspace, Slack asks one of them first.

  1. Open your Slack apps, click Create New App and choose From scratch.
  2. Name the app, for example Voxtrics, pick your workspace and click Create App.
  3. In the app's settings, open Incoming Webhooks and turn on Activate Incoming Webhooks.
  4. Click Add New Webhook to Workspace, choose the channel the alerts should go to and allow access. For a private channel, join it first.
  5. Copy the new URL under Webhook URLs for Your Workspace. It looks like https://hooks.slack.com/services/T0000/B0000/XXXXXXXX.

Slack's own guide to incoming webhooks: Sending messages using incoming webhooks.

Send alerts to Slack

  1. Go to Alerts and click New alert, or the pencil icon (Edit) on an existing rule.
  2. Set the rule's name, scope, time window and condition, as described in Alerts.
  3. Under Notify via, select Slack and paste the URL into Slack Webhook URL.
  4. Click Create alert, or Save changes for an existing rule.

A webhook posts only to the channel it was created for. To get alerts in another channel too, create a webhook for that channel and a rule of its own. Several rules can use the same webhook.

What the message says

Each time the rule fires, the channel gets a short text message with the rule's name, the domain, how many responses in the time window matched and why the rule fired. The responses themselves aren't in it: open the firing in Alerts to see them.

A rule fires at most once every 30 minutes, or less often if you set a throttle. A space's alerts post at most 200 messages a day to Slack and Telegram together. Past that a rule still fires and the firing shows in Alerts, but nothing is posted.

If messages don't arrive

  • If the alert isn't saved, check that the URL starts with https://hooks.slack.com/. Voxtrics accepts only Slack's webhook addresses, not a link to a channel or a message.
  • Check that the rule is enabled and has fired: every firing is listed in Alerts.
  • If the rule fired but nothing reached Slack, the webhook no longer works: the app was removed, the channel was archived or deleted, or Slack switched the URL off. Create a new webhook and paste it into the rule.
